Description
The GUTEX Thermowall-L, 140 mm thick, is a wood fibre render-bearing panel designed for external thermal insulation (ETI) of masonry, concrete or solid timber substrates. With a thermal resistance of R = 3.55 m².K/W, it is particularly suitable for projects requiring a thermal resistance greater than 3.5 m².K/W, a common standard in renovation work. Manufactured in Germany from fir and spruce wood, this panel offers good dimensional stability, appreciable sound insulation and excellent thermal inertia, which helps to limit overheating in summer whilst retaining heat in winter.

The 140 mm thick GUTEX Thermowall-L panel is a wood fibre insulation board designed for eco-friendly external thermal insulation (ETI) systems. Manufactured in Germany from fir and spruce wood, it can be installed on masonry, concrete or solid timber walls, in both new-build and energy-efficient renovation projects. With a thermal conductivity of 0.039 W/(m·K) and a thermal resistance of R = 3.55 m²·K/W for a thickness of 140 mm, this panel meets the requirements of projects aiming for a thermal resistance greater than 3.5 m²·K/W, which is a common requirement in renovation work. It retains the inherent qualities of wood fibre: good sound insulation, high thermal inertia and natural moisture regulation. Its permeability to water vapour promotes healthy and durable walls. The board forms part of the complete Thermowall system, which combines approved fixings, laths and renders for reliable external insulation. Measuring 1200 x 400 mm and designed for edge-to-edge installation, it can be fitted with precision, minimising thermal bridges at the joints. Its resistance to compression and tension makes it a reliable substrate for render finishes compatible with the system. This panel is designed for façade contractors, timber builders and private individuals undertaking a high-performance, sustainable and environmentally friendly external thermal insulation project.
This is the thickness I most often recommend for wood fibre: with an R-value of 3.55, it meets the standard target for renovation projects, whilst making the most of the fibre’s thermal inertia. Bear in mind the weight of the panels when handling them.

GUTEX wood fibre offers better thermal inertia and greater comfort in summer than EPS, as well as being bio-based; however, graphite-enhanced EPS retains the advantage of superior thermal resistance for the same thickness.
